Characterization of ABO / Rhesus Antigen Polymorphism Associated with Malaria in a Malaria Hotspot in Bayelsa State, Niger Delta, Nigeria

Aim: The aim of the present study was to characterize role ABO/Rhesus blood group antigen polymorphism in malaria among adults Bayelsa State, Niger Delta, Nigeria. pattern distribution area also assessed.
 Materials and Methods: Two hundred six (91 males 115 females) were randomly selected for they examined presence parasite infection illness as well type using real time PCR-high resolution melting analysis, clinical indicators agglutination methods respectively. density parasitemia evaluated microscopy socio-demographic variables collected a structured questionnaire. Multinomial logistics regression one way ANOVA tests used assess difference between frequencies means, respectively.
 Results: Showed that following order: O, 50% (O+ 47.57%; O- 2.43%), B, 21.36% (B+, 20.39%; B-, 0.97%), A, 18.93% (A+, 18.93%, A-, 0%), AB (AB+, 9.71%, AB-, 0%). Among severe subjects, ABO 29%; 57%; AB, 5% 10%. mild 36%; 33%; 23% 8%. asymptomatic 12%; 7% 69% subjects uninfected 20%; 53%. Each associated with malaria, while only B (P < 0.05). Parasite showed no association Blood group.
 Conclusion: malaria. O conferred protection against susceptibility Prevention treatment relation groups is implicated study.
